Check your anti-virus and run a scan ASAP. The virus is known to go through social networks such as Facebook and sites like we are on right here. It has attacked 10 million computers as of now.
I know that most of you keep up with your anti virus and updates. I am not intending to scare any one, but read this online.
Don’t open email attatchments with VBS, SHS, or PIF. Never open attachments with double file extensions such as NAME. BMP. EXE or NAME.TXT.VBS. You can read the information at CNET and clicking on antivirus software. It was on the news tonight with information on how to check for it. The report says to never accept attachments from strangers in online chat systems such as IRC, ICQ or AOL instant messanger.
I hope this information helps some of you casual computer users. I know the tech savvy people know all about this, but most of us just go online for fun.
Sorry…I said CNet, but on the local news tonight. It was CNet I went to to check for information on virus protection. I am not a computer wizard, and hope that someone who knows more can give more knowledgable information than an old geezer like me knows. I am just a casual computer user for fun and enjoyment and just want to make other casual users aware.
Don’t click on suggested websites here, but check it out yourself.
Great suggestions, Isotope! Thanks!
Indeed! And I would add that you make your next click and go to malwarebytes, and download their software. I detected nasty vicious stuff hiding on my computer that I was completely unaware of.
Thanks for sharing this very important info with us. I have been following the news & what they’re saying about this very “destructive” worm. It’s supposed to strike many computers tomorrow, April 1st…April Fool’s Day & that’s no joke. I watched “60 Minutes” last Sunday evening, & Leslie Stahl was interviewing a man who was pretty savvy about this worm & the destruction it will leave in it’s path. It’s a very nasty worm! These computer hackers need something more constructive to do with their lives.
I have an iMac, but I keep my updates current, just in case.
all ok, thanks for reminder.
i must admit originally i did wonder about the april 1st thing , but good to check anyway.
Turn off messenger, dont use it until this threat is over. Messenger is an open gate for viruses and spyware, Close it, then right click on the icon on the taskbar and click exit. Shut it down.
Update your antivirus programs, and your spyware programs. Turn on automatic updates, make sure your firewall is turned on, go into control panel and security centre to check that it is turned on !
Set your computer to do an auto scan at midnight and scan it several times during the day tomorrow.
Do not open any email attachments, even from people you know.
Do not open any email from someone you dont know.
Do not forward any “cute or funny stuff” to friends.
This thing will probably spread through email so DONT help it by sending spam to others.
If in doubt go to http://www.trendmicro.com and click on “housecall” and do a free online scan for spyware and viruses.
Safe computing is sort of like safe sex !!
Dont have unprotected contact with others. Always use protection, and keep it updated and effective – Be fair to your friends, use protection !! Vaccinate your operating system !!
Friends dont spread viruses to others because they are too lazy to use protection ! If you think you may have a virus DO NOT email all your friends and tell them — it will infect their computers too !!
I see people posting they havent update their antivirus or windows programs since 2003 !!! This is unbelievable !! WHY take the risk of infecting your system and all of your friends too? And sites like this one?
You can download critical updates from this site http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx
I took care of it already by a download to help me out.
Thanks for all the good advice.
I have a Mac, but I still use an antivirus anyway, just to be on the safe side.
I have a fire wall and working anti-virus software running at all times. Every day my computer is scanned for trouble.
My doctor told me to drink lots of liquids for it and I feel better now.
