Is is true that you expose yourself to the same amount of radiation each day by using your microwave as you would in a cat scan that was very short. I had a quick one this week that I thought was unneeded after I went home. I’m regretting my decision for going now. I think it was more my anxiety telling me to go and now its my anxiety worrying that I may help contribute to cancer later.

    Thanks!
*** I called and they said I was in there for about 17-20 seconds. That’s usually how long the scan would take. Does that sound long??

My mom was recently diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma after a lump in her breast was biopsied. She had it removed and before she starts radiation therapy, she was sent for a CT scan. It was all clear except for some spots on her liver. According to the doctor these were normally not malignant and she said they would do a follow up CT scan in a couple of months. Does this seem odd? I mean, shouldn’t they biopsy the spots now just to be sure. Her cancer is slow growing, but if these spots were malignant it seems it would be better to know now. If you’ve had any experience with this disease please respond. This has been very hard to deal with and I need any advice I can get.

Stage 3 stomach cancer – 2/3 lower portion of stomach removed, received chemo and radiation. Issues with pain, nausea. CT scan scheduled in near future – was told if comes back there is nothing the Dr’s can do. Want to slow possibility of reoccurence or growth. I’m looking for natural alternatives.

My 10 year old son had a really bad tummy ache one night and I ended up taking him to the emergency room. He received an abdominal ct scan (7 mSv; 700 mrem). At the time, I had no idea that a ct scan posed a cancer risk and I got no information from the hospital prior to agreeing to the scan. I have since researched a bit on-line and it is very scarey – especially for a child! An abdominal ct scan has a much greater radiation exposure than say a head ct scan does – about 3 years worth of radiation at one time! Please, is there anyone who can help put this in perspective for me and make be feel any better. I have a beautiful, smart, healthy child and I’m afraid I have given him a cancer sentence.

Hi everyone, i’m 14 years old (almost 15 in Feburary) and I need some advice. A few days before Christmas (hope you all had happy holidays) I went to the ER because I had some kidney pain. I was worried because a few years ago I had an enlarged kidney of unknown origin. I did a urine test and answered all questions asked and then the doctor came in. He told me in normal cases he’d do a CT scan but he wasn’t going to with me because i’ve been exposed to alot of radiation. When I was 11, my hip slipped out of the socket. In three years i’ve 6 six surgeries and my next one is in June. And after that I will have another one to take the screws and plate out that they are going to put in. So my question is, how much radiation can cause caner. The doctor at the ER informed me that i’m at a much higher rate for cancer not only now but throughout my life. I’ve had three CAT scans, two MRI’s, and close to 50 xrays altogether. Am I right to be scared? And if I get cancer, what kind would it be?

I had a VCUG (Voiding Cystourethrogram) done in March, which is a test where they check your bladder and it uses radiation.

I had a CAT Scan done in April of my Pelvis and Abdomen.

I had X-Rays done of my spine/chest/back done yesterday.

I just want to know if the radiation from those tests puts me at risk for cancer now or in the future. I just want to make sure that these tests will not cause any side effects (especially cancer).

    Thanks for anyone’s input!
